In case you haven’t heard, we will be worshipping with two hispanic churches from Lower Bucks County. The entire service will be translated in both English and Spanish We’ll have music led in english by Phil and The Well’s band as well as music in Spanish led by the bands from the hispanic churches. We’ve also invited these two churches to share lunch with us after church.

There are a lot of unknowns when we engage in something like this. Our two communities come from very different places and perspectives. I am not sure how many members of the other churches will be there and how many kids they will bring with them. It will probably be a bit of controlled chaos on Sunday morning!

But, despite all our differences, we have the opportunity to bring together two worlds that rarely interact. If you pay attention to the demographics of Lower Bucks County you’ll realize that there are about 20,000 hispanic people living in our area. And, if you pay attention on another level you’ll realize that our two communities rarely interact. On Sunday, we have the opportunity to take a step in seeing two worlds come together in and through the name of Jesus Christ. In our study of Romans this year, Paul was adamant that unity in the body of Christ was an essential working out of the gospel. This weekend, we get to continue the journey of living that out!

So I want to encourage you, bring your most hospitable self on Sunday morning. I hope that we can humbly treat our visitors as more important than ourselves! Even if you speak less spanish than me, do your best to interact and show love to the guests who are entering into our home. Also, as I said we’re not sure how many kids will be joining us. We may need some people to be prepared to jump in and provide some support to our regular Sunday school teachers!

On a side note, when it comes to seating on Sunday morning, let’s work hard to not have there be the hispanic section and The Well section. People naturally sit near people like them, but this week, take a risk and place yourself in a row and worship alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ.

For the meal afterwards, we’ve invited them to bring meals to share. We invite you to do the same as we do whenever we share a lunch together. Please bring a main dish and a side dish to share. We’ll have plenty of table set up to plug in crock pots.

Finally, please pray. Please pray that this Sunday would be a small step on a long journey of seeing the church come together as one in the name of Jesus Christ. Please pray that friendship and love will be the motivations. Please pray that the name of Jesus will be glorified above all things through our time together. Please pray that our time on Sunday would truly be a small taste of heaven on earth.

Looking forward to an awesome sunday of serving!

Todd Hiestand

About the Trip
13 People from The Well will be traveling to Guatemala City this week to serve with Lemonade International in the community of La Limonada in Guatemala City. This community is home to up to 100,000 people and is considered the largest slum in Central America.

We will be serving in two schools alongside an amazing woman named Tita. Since 2001, Tita Evertsz and her team have provided love, education, healthy meals, mentoring, counseling, medical care, scholarships, gang prevention through the “Vidas Plenas” (translation: “Full Lives”) program.

The mission of Lemonade International is to “educate and empower people living in the largest urban slum in Central America”.

We will also be serving alongside a new network of house churches that is being planted in La Limonada.

The team covets your prayers for their safety and their work with the kids. Pray that they can go forward in humility and with servants hearts as we know that this team will learn just as much, if not more, than those they are serving.

Dear Church Family,

I am not ashamed to admit that Eugene Peterson is an author who has had a big influence on me as a leader and pastor. Over the years, his writings have encouraged me challenged me deeply. One of the themes that I have noticed in his writing has been that following Jesus together in this thing we call “church” is something that must be approached with “patient intentionality.”

Patience: In a society that likes to get what it wants when it wants it, we’ve lost the ability to wait patiently for things. In fact, we like to be in control of everything. This flies in the face of what it means to wait for the Spirit to do its (often quiet) work. Formation into the image of Christ doesn’t happen overnight. It is a lifelong journey that is full of ups and downs and “sidewayses” (yes, I just made that word up). In the same way, a community is not formed into a perfect expression of the Kingdom over night either. I’m learning to be patient with the way God is leading us and shaping us. Sometimes this formation comes through wonderful successes but other times this formation comes through trial, error and missteps. Most times our greatest successes are full of some of our biggest errors and missteps. Being patient together as a community means we are not in control, we are not perfect but that we are allowing the Spirit to do its work in and among us. Sometimes this is beautiful. Other times this looks more like a beautiful mess. But, I believe in the midst of all our personal messes and successes and even our community messes and successes, God is working. We need to learn to be patient and allow the spirit to lead, direct, comfort and correct our lives individually and corporately.

Intentionality: It’s easy to go through life not realizing how you are being shaped and formed. It’s easy to take what the world gives you and do your best to make lemonade out of lemons. It’s also far too easy to allow our radical call to discipleship and Christlikeness to sit on the back burner to all the other things we have going on in our lives (as if our discipleship is separate from all of that). Our recent study on Romans and our study of Acts a while ago has taught me that the Christian life in community is not a piece of the pie. Rather, it is the pie. In our culture we have been taught to fragment our lives and because of this we have to be intentional, and even aggressive, about making sure that our call to be formed into the image of Christ is shaping all that we do.

If you put these two thoughts together, they may seem contradictory. But to me, they sound a bit like Philippians 2:12-13 where Paul says, “continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

My prayer is that together, we can do this well. In complete and total dependence on the Spirit, may we be intentional in working out our discipleship.

This Sunday morning, June 6th we begin worshipping together at 10:00am. I’m excited! Not so much because I love the 10:00am hour, but more because of what it signifies. As I have been trying to explain on Sunday mornings, this time change signifies a recommitment and refocus on holistic discipleship together in community. On Sunday, I’ll talk more about what it means for us to be formed into the image of Christ through liturgy, relationships, our personal walk with God, mission and the renewal of our minds. I’m excited about framing our discipleship in this way because it gives us a means of looking at our lives and being patiently intentional about our life rhythms.

We are in this together.

I pray that we can continue to be a community that gives people a glimpse of the grace of God. May we rely on God’s grace in all things. In our failures may we realize that we are forgiven and loved while seeking to learn and grow forward in the power of the Spirit. In our successes, may we realize that we are blessed to be vessels of God’s grace and give Him all the glory.

Now to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey him— to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen. (Romans 16:25-26)

Grace and Peace,

As I was studying this week for Romans 13 I came across this "short" summary by NT Wright on the thought process that Paul has been trying to develop in the book of Romans. I thought this was pretty heady, but also very helpful…

“Paul declares that Israel has been entrusted with God’s oracles; in other words, that Israel has been God’s chosen messenger to the nations. But Israel, Paul says (drawing of course on the prophetic writings), has been unfaithful, had not discharged the commission. This is cognate with what he says in Romans 10:2-3: Israel had failed to understand God’s covenant purposes, and had sought to promote a covenant status for itself alone. What then is God to do? Is he to abandon the covenant and to decide, as so many theologians have proposed, on a drastically different ‘Plan B’? By no means: let God be true, though all human beings be false. God must stick to the plan. But that means that sooner or later He will require a representative Israelite who will be faithful, who will be obedient to God’s purpose not only for Israel but through Israel for the world. The world then waits (without even knowing it), and Israel then waits (with that knowing which comes to expression in prophets and prayer) for God to unveil his purpose, to reveal how it is that he will after all be true to his covenant. But when the moment of unveiling arrives, what we see is God’s covenant faithfulness operating dia pisteos Iesou Christou, that is, through the faithfulness of Jesus the Messiah. Precisely as Messiah, he offers God that representative faith to the plan of salvation through which the plan can go ahead at last, Abraham can have a worldwide family and the long entail of Adam’s sin and death can be undone through the Messiah’s obedience, which we know is for Paul very closely aligned with faith, faithfulness and fidelity.”

Todd very loosely paraphrased Romans 12:1-2 in light of his sermon on that passage this week. Here is what he shared:

“As we understand God’s whole, all-encompassing mercy for what it really is, we should naturally be offering our lives for the sake of His cause, His Kingdom and His agenda for the world, even when it looks like a waste of time, money and resources to outsiders. As we do so, we must come together and work together as a community to be constantly and painstakingly aware of our culture’s default way of life and especially of the way our culture defines ‘the good life.’ We need to constantly struggle together to swim against those tempting currents, graciously helping and calling each other to a more selfless way of life. We do this by engaging in a pursuit of truth that does not merely provide us with good facts and information about God but rather, transforms us and changes us into people who live in the way that he set out for us.”

Here are a few of the quotes that he used in his sermon as well,

Karl Barth on the church’s relationship to the world:

“For the Church has been placed right into this world: yea, she lives her apparently separate life for the sake of this world! It is therefore all-important that – while raising her protest against the form of the world – she lives her life for and not against the world…Stoic detachment from the life with the people in the world has most decidedly never been the kind of blessing demanded of a Christian.”

CS Lewis on the intellectual side of faith:

“God has room for people with very little sense, but He wants everyone top use what sense they have. They proper motto is not “Be good, sweet maid, and let who can be clever,” but “Be good, sweet maid, and don’t forget that this involves being as clever as you can.” God is no fonder of intellectual slackers than of any other slackers. If you are thinking of becoming a Christian, I warn you you are embarking on something which is goijng to take the whole of you, brains and all…One reason why it needs no special education to be a Christian is that Christianity is an education itself.”

Lesslie Newbigin on religious pluralism:

“No faith can command a man’s final and absolute allegiance, that is to say no faith can be a man’s real religion, if he knows that it is only true for certain places and certain people. In a world which knows that there is only one physics and one mathematics, religion cannot do less than claim for its affirmations a like universal validity.”

Dallas Willard on the knowledge of religion

“For most of Western History, the basic claims of the Christian tradition have in fact been regarded by its proponents as knowledge of reality, and they were presented as such. You cannot understand the history of the European peoples unless you understand that. Indeed, a similar point is to be made of all religions and their cultures. Religion as actually lived, not as some figment of the academic imagination, always claims to involve knowledge of how things are. That is the nature of religion. One cannot seriously imagine the Buddha, for example, presenting his teachings merely as sentiments, guesses, personal commitments, or a leap of faith. Nor did those who heard him and followed him understand him that way. They understood him as conveying a true picture of profound realities, and as doing so on the basis of knowledge he had gained from his thought and experiences.”

If you weren’t able to make it for our 2010 Annual Meeting last Sunday we hope this summary will do a decent job of brining you mostly up to speed. In our annual meeting we talked about some ways we are going to focus our mission for the upcoming year. If you are interested in reading more about what our overall goals are as a community, you can read a detailed description that I have recently put up on our website (http://church.thewellpa.com/what-are-we-doing/). But basically put, we’re a community that is shaping and sending each other into the world to be witnesses to Jesus Christ.

In our meeting on Sunday, we reviewed our goals from 2009 and then took some time to talk about some key goals we’ll be focusing on for 2010.

Review of Goals from 2009:

The Building We set out with a goal last year to address the use of our space. Our intention since the day we moved in has been to have it be a tool to serve and bless others. As we began looking at this last year, we had two main goals: 1) To use our space to bless others 2) rent our space to help financially support our mission. Over the years we have done this well. But, we’ve struggled with consistency. So, last year we spent a good amount of time behind the scenes looking at different approaches to how we could do this with more focus. The result of this was that this year we decided to go forward with hiring someone to oversee the use of our space. You should have seen the advertisements for this position on the website, in the e-mail, announcements from the front and in the bulletin the last two months. The person we have decided is best fit for this position is Dan Dauenbaugh (you might know him as the non-bald sound guy). We are excited about having Dan fill this role! If you have questions about the role that Dan will fulfill, please let us know.

Bristol - Last year we started out the year praying for God’s leading in Bristol. A small group met in Bristol this summer at the home of Brian and Dorie Morgan and God soon formed in this group a vision and a calling for starting a church there. This group began meeting for worship in the fall of last year and it’s been wonderful to be able to watch them learn and grow as a community, even in such a short time. They formed officially as Redemption Church of Bristol and are finalizing their articles of incorporation right now. They have been working hard to get integrated into the life of Bristol and they have done a great job caring for the homeless community there. In fact, there are a number of homeless folks who worship with Redemption Church every Sunday night. This year we will be supporting this community financially and we will have the opportunity to parter with them on the annual local missions trip and other projects that arise.

Address our discipleship process - We spent a lot of time praying through and taking a good look at our environment of discipleship and we’re excited where God is leading. There are generally four ways we are formed together into the image of Christ:

Personal Formation – this would include personal disciplines like prayer, silence, bible study, fasting, personal retreats, etc.

Liturgical Formation – our corporate worship gatherings are meant to shape us together as a community for the sake of our mission together.

Relational Formation – relationships are a very vital component of our formation, especially as we meet intentionally to speak the gospel into one another lives

Educational Formation – we believe that knowledge and truth is a vital part of our formation as it gives grounding to our faith.

We have room to grow in all of these areas but as we looked at our life together as a community it was clear that we have the most work to do in the area of educational formation. We have tried many different approaches to this with limited success and this year we want to concentrate growing in this area. This year we want to address this concern (you will read more about this below).

We also talked about our upcoming goals for 2011. These goals are:

Continued to focus on discipleship. We will be doing this in three specific ways:

We will be addressing our need for more education opportunities. We’ll have more information about how this approach might look on Sunday morning. But, this means the possibility of moving our worship gathering time to 10:00am – 11:30 am and therefore having the option to have classes from 11:45am – 12:30pm. There are a lot of details to work out in this proposal (childcare, length of service, lunch, class size, etc.) but we sense a great need for all of us to have opportunities for deeper Christian Education. This schedule would start in April if we move forward with it. Between now and then we will look at how the details would work out and have some opportunities to hear your feedback.

We will be fostering a conversation about human sexuality this summer. Simply put, this is a topic that is a hot button in our culture and we want to talk about it. We are still working out the format on how we will do this (Sunday mornings, Community Midrash, special classes, etc).

We will have some intentional ways for us to continue to foster and increase our culture of generosity at The Well. We’ll do this by providing practical support for each other in helping us address our personal/family financial situations, mainly debt. One of the ways we will do this, along with a few others, is by having a monthly budgeting support group for those who are looking for some hope and some support in getting their finances in order. This group will be starting in late March. We will also be offering an introduction to budgeting class this year as well.

Organizational Stability We are working on taking this year to re-organize our staff and pastors in light of the Bristol Church plant. With Gary now moving to Bristol, we need to address the make up of our pastors and staff. While Gary is not necessarily replaceable, we are working on how to fill in the gaps that his transition leaves. Starting in May, Todd will be moving 35 hours a week (he is currently paid for 25 hours a week). He will still be working another job as a web designer but this change will allow him to focus more on leadership and pastoral responsibilities with the church in way that is more sustainable for The Well and for his family. As you may have seen will also be hiring a part-time Administrative Coordinator in early summer to manage all the behind the scenes things that the church needs done.

Community Calling and Mission. One of the marks of The Well is a desire to continually evaluate our calling and mission in Bucks County. We have identified locality as one of our key values. That is, we see that a big part of our calling is to care for and be present in the area that we live. Our location does not lend itself to a strong, specific local calling. Many churches are started in areas where there is a strong sense of “place” such as Redemption Church in Bristol or our friends the Renew Community in Lansdale. For these churches their calling is clear: the specific town they are in. Redemption’s mission is Bristol. Renew’s mission is Lansdale. For The Well, it’s not that simple. There is no town square in Feasterville. I guess you could say that Feasterville’s town center is the corner of Street Road and Bustleton Pike but all we have there is a Walgreens, a Ford Dealership and the Suburban Diner. That’s not much of a town square if you as me! Not only does Feasterville and Lower Southampton Township not have much of an identity, but another issue is that most of us come from anywhere but Feasterville. We come from places like Hatboro to Bensalem, from Newtown and Doylestown and Langhorne and Levittown. Since are in a place like sprawling suburbia we have to think differently about what it means to have a public witness as a community. For the last couple years we have done wonderful work in getting know the needs and those serving in Lower Bucks County. This year, we will be focusing on getting to know the passions, gifting, callings and experiences that are in our congregation as we seek to find our missional identity in Lower Bucks County. We will generally approach this in two ways (among others):

A series of Midrash / Community conversations around what our stories are, what our passions are and where the fringes (i.e. the wrong side of the tracks) of our community are. These will begin this summer and head into the fall.

We will have an intern from Princeton Theological Seminary this summer who will be working with a team of people from The Well to spend some time listening to and compiling the stories and passions of our congregation. We believe that the future of The Well lies in who we are, the passions we have and the gifts we bring. As we move forward in this new phase, it will be exciting to see how God is leading and guiding us.

Other Stuff, Budgets and Votes:

During our meeting Phil Wood did an excellent job of detailing how and why we have the budget that we have. We sent this budget out last week and if you would like another copy please let us know. Per our constitution, we will have a vote of affirmation in two weeks after this budget was presented. Also, our constitution calls that the congregation affirm our decision to add Dan Dauenbaugh as the Building Coordinator. Therefore, in two weeks (March 7th) we will have a short meeting after church to have a vote of affirmation on these two topics.

In all of this, our prayer is that when 2011 comes around, we will be able to say that we have grown well in the area of Biblical education, organizational stability and especially in our understanding of the specifics of what it means to be a distinctly Christian community in the strange world of Suburban Philadelphia. But mostly, we pray that we would continue to be a community for the sake of others.

One final note, if you have any questions about decisions that are being made, have been made or might be made, please come talk to someone on the Ministry Leadership Team. We know that it is practically impossible for us to give voice to every specific detail of every decision that happens in our community. But, at the same time, we want to be an open book. If you have questions, comments or concerns that you are carrying, let’s talk!

Looking forward to a wonderful year on mission together!

This week in Sunday School we introduced a month long project which they will begin in February. We will be focusing on teaching the kids ways to show love to others. We will be discussing the situation in Haiti and the kids will brainstorm ways they can raise money and awareness of this tragedy.

The children will also be spending time in prayer, reading and discovering what the Bible says about God’s Love…and how we as believers should be spreading God’s Love to others.

Therefore, each week we will encourage the kids to bring in offering that they have earned and put it in a jar that will be counted at the end of the month.

As parents, you play the key role in the spiritual maturity of your child. We would like to encourage you to continue processing these concepts with your child during the week as well as encourage them to stick with their goals and ideas of how they can help with not only Haiti, but in other situations that occur both internationally and locally. This could be talking about Haiti and brainstorming more ways that they can help, praying with them, teaching them about God’s control…the possibilities are endless! Thank you so much for your support and involvement in this project!

Peace,

Building Manager

Hours:
20+ hours/week

Reimbursement Model:
Commission (inquire about compensation rate) + personal support raising (We will have a base pay-rate so that it is possible for this person to justify time and energy spent on non-profit renters where there would be little to no commission).

Base Salary Pay Rate:

$13/hour + commission

hourly rate will be paid as support is raised/available

Reports to:

This position will report directly to The Well’s Lead Pastor.

Job Summary / History:
When our community moved into our current building in 2004, we had the goal that our space would help us participate in the life of our local community by being a venue for events and non-profit organizations that were taking part in Kingdom work. We also had a goal of maximizing our space to help financially support our mission.

Over the years we have had some good success in these goals. We’ve hosted our own arts, music and justice based events. We have been able to bless non-profit organizations with good low cost rental space. We have also had the opportunity to bring in financial support to our mission through renting our space to for-profit organizations.

Over the years, it has become clear that for us to maintain the kind of focus we need around the use of our space, we need someone focused on the task of coordinating and running events as well as finding and confirming potential renters.

Therefore, the person who holds this position will coordinate and oversee the use of our space. He/she will work with the staff and volunteers to maximize the effectiveness of The Well’s space to further and support our mission.

The main goals of this position are:

To rent our space to acceptable organizations and businesses to help financially support our Mission.

The successful applicant will work with the Lead Pastor to develop specific goals and strategies around these two key goals.

To work with volunteers within The Well to help us run our own kingdom focused events such as art shows, concerts, forums, etc.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

Sales: Seek out and follow-up leads for rentals from for-profit organizations and non-profit organizations.

For-Profit Use: Seek out “corporate” uses of our space that would result in income for The Well

Non-Profit Use: Seek out and partner with Non-Profits in Bucks County that would benefit from using our space at a free or reduced rate. (i.e.

Maintenance: Work with current staff to oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of our space.

Cost Structure: Work with Lead Pastor to create and maintain a rental / cost structure for the use of our space (for Non-profit, for profit organizations)

Raise personal financial support (We provide an excellent training and mentorship program for this responsibility through the Ecclesia Network)

Attend week long support raising session for the Ecclesia Network (date tbd)

It’s hard to believe it’s almost 2010. While you are figuring out whether you want to call it two-thousand-ten or twenty-ten, I thought it would be a good time to write a quick update…

It’s hard to believe it’s almost 2010. While you are figuring out whether you want to call it two-thousand-ten or twenty-ten, I thought it would be a good time to write a quick update/review of the less controversially pronounced year, two-thousand-nine…or is that twenty-oh-nine…

No matter how you pronounce it, this has been a full year and together, we have seen God at work. We continue to seek to be a community that shapes and sends Christians into the world to be witnesses for Jesus Christ.

It’s no secret that this year has been financially tough for everyone. As we discussed together in October, The Well has not been totally exempt from this. We’ve worked hard to stay true to our mantra that, “We should be as stingy as possible to ourselves and as generous as possible to others.” I believe with my whole heart that we have lived this out well.

As we finish out this year, I want to encourage you to think about giving a special financial gift to The Well toward our mission together. We want to stay as true to the financial commitments we have made and your generous gifts are need for us to do so.

Any time we talk about money, budgets and generosity we must remember that our money is a means to an end. We have a budget because we have a mission. We do not have a mission because we have a budget. In 2009, we have seen this mission lived out in some amazing ways.

Over the year, we have seen new members added to our journey together. Megan DiPrimeo is one of those newer members who has been so deeply touched by all of you. Recently she expressed this in writing,

“I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes and gratitude in my heart. On so many levels the Well saved my life. My soul was tarnished from traveling life’s road, my heart broken, my soul unsettled and the Well restored my faith in humanity. My eternal thanks!”

We have also seen some folks move on. This is always bitter-sweet because we know that God calls his children to specific places at specific times, but we still miss their daily, weekly, year round presence with us. One of the ways we’ve experienced this most deeply is in the birth of a new congregation in Bristol. It is such a blessing that we get to be part of what God is doing in this hurting town.

We’ve seen God move in so many other ways as well. God called us again to a week of intense service in Lower Bucks County with our suburban missions trip that culminated in a fantastic Forum on Suburban Homelessness. In fact, a few of our panelists has since played a very instrumental role in developing an emergency shelter system for the homeless in Lower Bucks County. It’s exciting to know that God used our event to help bring people together around this important issue!

Behind the scenes, God has also used so many of you to bless each other and care for one another. I’ve been encouraged all year long as I’ve heard seen this evidenced.

By the end of 2009, we will have gathered 52 times on Sunday morning. During those times we’ve had the privilege of coming together as a community to worship our risen Messiah. We have continued to invite the Holy Spirit to allow the scriptures form us and shape us for the mission he has called us to. Our studies through Micah, the Parables and Romans have been formative to our life and mission together (sometimes these texts have been annoyingly convicting!).

As we scatter each week, I absolutely know that God has also been using each of you in your workplaces, neighborhoods, and homes.

This past week, in remembering the impact that Katie Nolan has had on my own life and the life of this church, I’ve been doing a lot of processing and contemplating my last nine years as part of The Well. I’ve spent some time going through old e-mails, leadership team minutes, church letters, orders of service and bulletins. This week has reconfirmed in me how much I love this community. It has reconfirmed in me how much I love our mission together. It has reconfirmed in me my commitment to the cause of Christ.

I look forward to 2010. I look forward to seeing how God will change us, transform us, challenge us and above all, love us. I look forward to seeing how God will use us to transform others, challenge others and above all, love others.

As I stated before, I would like to ask you to generously give an end of the year gift towards our mission together. You may do this on Sunday morning and you may also do this using our online giving.

For the sake of others,

Todd Hiestand (and the rest of the Ministry Leadership Team)
